College of science has been established in 27/3/1949 which agrees with 20, first Jumada, 1368 where the first seed for scientific foundation was planted in

Iraq

This date has become later the day of science in our century. The college has been consisted of five departments, chemistry, physics, mathematics, pathology and entomology.

Then the two departments have been grouped in one department under the name of (Biology). In 1953 the department of geology was opened and some other new departments which provide the different state sectors with many specialize. In 1983 the departments of computer has been established and in 1993 establish the department of technology for higher education which was followed by opening studies for undergraduate studies in 1999. In 1998 the department of Astronomy was opened and in 1999 the remote sensing unite was founded. The higher studies for the M.Sc. degree were opened in the departments of Mathematics, in 1962/1963, Physics in 1965/1966, Biology and Geology 1966/1967. Then the higher studies for Ph.D. degree were opened in 1970/1971 in department of Biology then in department of Chemistry in 1976/1977. Another higher study for Ph.D. degree was opened in 1977/1978 in departments of Mathematics and Geology, then they were followed be department of Physics in 1978/1979.According to the scientific and industrial evolution in Iraq, many professionalism  and specialists were prepared to participate in the development of our beloved country. The number of students in higher studies was increased and the specialties were varied according to the developing requirement. The scientific and technical development was accompanied by increase and variation in the college institutes and its achievements. The college provided our society, during its long scientific period, thousands 1992. The college established a consulting office which aimed at organizing the relation between the college and other state institutes for purpose of proposing scientific and technical services.
